SOS Prevention Program
Parents/Caregivers of 7th Grade and 9th Grade Students: September is National Suicide Prevention Month. As you know from daily news stories, suicide rates have been steadily increasing among adolescents. A recent study showed that from 2007 to 2015, suicide rates doubled among teen girls and rose by more than 30% among teen boys. Swink Junior/Senior High School will be sharing an evidence-based suicide prevention program with seventh and ninth grade students on Thursday, September 17, 2020. Mrs. Mills, our mental health counselor, and Mrs. Miller, one of the school nurses, will be presenting the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program. SOS is a one class period presentation that helps students recognize the warning signs and symptoms of depression and suicide in themselves or their friends, and also teaches them how to get help. Seventh graders will watch the Middle School Presentation, and 9th graders will watch the High School Presentation. Both presentations can be previewed at https://sossignsofsuicide.org/parent. Please feel free to contact us with questions about these programs. Beth Miller, RN, Carla Mills, LPC (719-384-8103)
